Which Essential Oils are Safe for my Baby?
Essential Oils are all the rage right now it seems, and while they’re not new by any means they are trendy, which makes us all want to hop on the bandwagon. If you’re like me, you probably look for the best deal out there when you shop – and understandably so, the current economy makes it difficult enough to make ends meet, add in the rising cost of groceries, gas & other necessities and you’re likely searching couch cushions for change by the end of the month. While there are some great ways to save money and even bring in money while staying home with your kiddos, you still want to be a good steward of your finances and get the best deals, understandably.
When we’re discussing anything that goes on or in our bodies, though- especially our children’s bodies – we want to look at more than just the short term cost though. Here’s how I look at choices, everything has two costs: short term and long term. Short term cost is what you’re paying right now, it’s the immediate impact that you see and feel in your wallet, body, mind, etc. – it’s what most people focus on. Long term is what you’re actually paying, the future impact of the choices on all of the above criteria.
Now, a lot of people are living in a panic-state, where they’re addressing the urgent and immediate needs of themselves and their loved ones – out of necessity and survival instinct. Our brains haven’t changed since the creation of the world, when man had to defend himself against imminent threats such as the Saber Toothed Tiger & other wild beasts. Survival mode is there to help us survive, in the here and now, but we also have rational parts of our brain – should we choose to use them – which help us make wise decisions with the Big View – or the Zoomed Out View – of life in mind. That means if we’re being mindful about our decision making processes, we look at both short and long term cost and impact when making decisions in all areas of life.
Talking about Essential Oils specifically – cause that’s what this post is about – Purity and Source matter. Big time. That’s why, after getting multiple chemical burns from inferior “Big Box Store” and even some Mom & Pop Shop oils, I decided to look into some online companies. There had to be a reason people were “paying up” for these Premium Oils, or was there? What I found out, after months of skeptical research and digging, was essentially that the oil is either extracted or distilled from the Plant material (shrubs, flowers, tree, roots, bushes, rinds, resins, herbs & fruits) in the proper timing & method for each specific oil, tested thoroughly and bottled up, all by one company. One company that is so passionate about purity that they check land records going back 100 years before utilizing the soil for growing their product. One company that will go out of stock on one of their most popular oils for an extended period of time – losing hundreds of thousands of dollars – just because one of the key components was unable to be acquired. A company that has stood the test of time – 30 years in business, very rare in the Network Marketing industry, and a first in the essential oil industry, due to their rigorous commitment of Sourcing, Science & Standards. That is why I feel safe using these products on, in and around myself and my precious family.
You can’t sell a 8oz bottle of pure Lavender oil for $10, you’d be out of business in a week! That’s not lavender in that bottle, sis. It takes 27 square feet of Lavender plants to make one 15-ml bottle of Lavender oil.
Now, back to babies, what’s safe and what’s off limits? Babies (and young children) have larger pores and smaller airways, which makes them more sensitive and vulnerable, even to natural constituents. I like to leave areas like this to the experts, but I’m also an advocate for using your gut. There are occasions where I have used “no no” oils (well diluted of course) on youngin’s, but always check with your trusted health provider if you have any questions at all! For those who want to take the guesswork out of things and have a simple, straightforward way to get known safe oils into their home with children present, there is an entire line of oils and products devoted to babies and kids, it makes a great gift for new parents or loved ones who may currently be using toxic candles and other products around their children unknowingly exposing them to carcinogens & other harmful substances.
Here’s a chart that gives you a rundown and hopefully a better understanding of which essential oils are safe for your baby, and which ones you may want to stay away from, as well as a simple dilution chart & a few other helpful tips and bits of info.
